Award Winning Design

Sakura Ridge Farm & Lodge

Sakura Ridge is a working organic pear orchard, farm, and beautiful Bed & Breakfast; located less than twenty minutes from downtown Hood River in the foothills of Mount Hood. Spectacular views and rustic elegance coupled with abundant gardens make this a memorable place.

Design Intent

A highlight is the owners’ handsome kitchen garden below the Lodge. It consists of five sturdy, custom raised beds, built out of rough-cut cedar and topped with 2×12 boards to function as seating and for ease of maintenance. A large, organic berry garden to the east furnishes abundant fruit for guest breakfasts, jams and jellies. Lush shrubs and perennials, and mixed borders surround the Lodge. A sheltered patio on the north side invites guests to enjoy the gardens and orchard views. Several patios and sitting areas on the south side allow for panoramic valley, mountain and forest views. Sakura Ridge Lodge has one of the most spectacular views of Mount Hood you will find.

Installation

The gardens at Sakura Ridge were designed by Marion McNew of Mount Hood Gardens, Inc. in spring of 2007 and installed during the summer of that year by the company’s crew and several subcontractors. Several smaller phases subsequently followed.

The Design for Sakura Ridge Farm and Lodge received an Honor Award (First Place) in the 2010 International Landscape Design Awards Program of the Perennial Plant Association. For more information on Sakura Ridge Farm and Lodge, please visit their website sakuraridge.com

Hedgerow Conservation Hedge

The new hedgerow along the entrance driveway, just past the gate, was designed by Marion McNew in 2011 following the owners’ parameters, and installed in fall of 2011 and spring of 2012. The border is 1200 feet long and 14 feet deep. Native, partial shade-loving shrubs were planted in expansive groupings in the border’s most northern portion. The plants are lower in size as to not obstruct the view of Mt. Hood. The planting scheme changes to sun-loving shrubs, mainly summer and fall-blooming, as one drives along the hedgerow and toward the Lodge. Some late-blooming perennials appear toward the south end, offering a late season nectar feast. All chosen plants provide a haven for bees, as well as possessing other beneficial properties. The main purpose of this hedgerow is to offer continuous forage for honeybees, after the pear blossom, as well as functioning as attractive and ornamental screening from the neighboring property.
