Planting Installation

Following the hardscape phase and thorough organic soil preparation, the plants will be installed.

Planting Philosophy

Our plantings are designed with the plant community or plant habitat principle in mind, where natural vegetation types may be used as a template and inspiration for the chosen planting schemes. Considering the ecological needs of plants, and not only their aesthetic value, results in lower-maintenance, naturalistic and healthy plantings.

Studying how plants grow in the wild provides important clues in understanding their soil and aspect preferences. Liberal repetition of certain plants, implemented in a style that Marion calls “rhythmic interweaving”, creates continuity and a pleasing flow of color and texture. We aim for year-round interest in our landscape designs, and wish to be sensitive to the environment and use of natural resources. Thorough and organic soil preparation prior to planting is essential to promoting a healthy soil life, or soil food web, and increases water and nutrient retention. Many different planting schemes are possible. Please refer to our residential portfolio for the diverse garden styles we offer, and photos of our repertoire.

Maintenance

Garden maintenance needs to be considered from the onset. Plantings are naturally dynamic and evolve over time. Plantings and hardscape elements are frequently chosen with low-maintenance in mind. They still need regular care and attention, particularly until the plants have been established.

While we provide a certain amount of horticultural landscape maintenance and hand pruning for our clients, we are not able to take care of every one of our landscapes. We work with several other maintenance companies.

Nursery

Mount Hood Gardens operates its own licensed growing facility and tree nursery on the south side of Hood River, at the base of magnificent Mt. Hood.

A successful garden starts with hardy, acclimated plants. In the Mid-Columbia, winds can be harsh and the weather is prone to rapid change. Summer, while usually warm and pleasant, can be hot and dry. Winter may produce periods of heavy snow and ice, or open, frozen ground. Plants actually raised in this climate will be most adaptable and successful. That is why we believe in growing our own plants at Mount Hood Gardens.

We regularly test new plant varieties and evaluate them in our display gardens and stock beds. Once they have proven their value and adaptability to our locale, we may add them to our plant palette.

We exclusively produce plants for our clients’ gardens, and do not sell to the public. Visits are strictly by appointment only.
